A week ago, I was talking with a few friends; catching up from the craziness of the holidays, and inveitably, since it's the start of the new year, the topic of goals and plans came up. (Let's be honest-New Year's Resolutions have never really stuck-for me. They were definitely long forgotten by February probably under a pile of other good intentions recklessly abandoned in the everyday-ness of life.)
As we continued with our discussion,
one friend shared the thought of selecting a theme word for the year and making
that a central focus. That thought really resonated with me, as I had
already been mulling over what I was going to do differently in 2015 and
how I was going to make this year more meaningful than the one
before. As I thought about it the more I really embraced the idea and began thinking about what this year's theme word should be.
Reconnecting with the idea later the
next day, being a modern day internet junkie, I
consulted with the all knowing World Wide Web to see if what other people had
written. Lo and behold this article reveal itsself that seemed to
express exactly what I'd been feeling.
Before this paradigm shifting
conversation happened with these friends of mine, I had already begun
working on a project that I was planning to do for 2015 called
"Rediscovering San Diego". To give you some insight on my
state of mind, I have been blessed to live in a place that most
people just vacation in occasionally and the very end of 2014
marked my 10 year anniversary of living in San Diego (just saying that in
print is surreal, I don't even know where the time has gone). I was going through what I call the routine, mundane, ho-hum, daily motions
of life- sometimes feeling like I was having a Ground Hog Day moment.
Not bad exactly, just a status quo existence. Being in
charge of my own happiness, that was no one else's fault but my own, so I
decided to embark on a new journey this year and reach the full potential of
living in one of America's finest cities.
Reaching out to my San Diego Friends
(some that live here and some that have reluctantly moved on from one the best
places to live ever) and asked them to send me there suggestions for their
favorite places, activities, and eats in and around San Diego. It's been
so inspiring to hear these suggestions and to think about the new possibilities
for exploring the city and feeling a little silly that I've obviously missed so much
that was right under my nose. The responses are still trickling in and
I'm working on compiling them all into comprehensive list that I will post
soon.
In working on this project and
reflecting on my life long goals, I've selected DISCOVER as my theme
word of the year.
DISCOVER:
- find (something or someone) unexpectedly or in the
course of a search.
- be the first to recognize the potential of someone or
somthing
- become aware of
- disclose the identity of
- divulge (a secret)
- to show the presence of (something hidden or difficult
to see)
- to make (something) known
- to see, find, or become aware of (something) for the
first time
- to bring to light
